The member agencies of Metro 4 and SESARM manage extensive monitoring programs to collect and analyze samples of the outside air. Ambient monitoring occurs for such compounds and materials as carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, ozone, particles (coarse and fine), sulfur dioxide, and toxic air pollutants. Our monitoring managers are also responsible for maintaining links to real-time web sites that display current air quality data. When elevated readings are found, this information is shared with the public. Air monitoring data is a key component of overall air quality management and is used in various planning, permitting, and compliance functions. Monitoring efforts require substantial financial and staffing resources. Our agencies are committed to production of precise, reliable data in their monitoring programs. Thus an additional important component of their work is to ensure the quality of the data being generated.
